What is Epoxy Resin?
Two-component epoxy resins, also known as epoxy putty, are polymers created by mixing two main components: a resin and a hardener (catalyst). Once combined, they form a solid, glossy, and vitrified material.
Epoxy Resins: Uses and Applications
Two-component epoxy resins can be used for:
- Marmore Adhesion: Bonding marble surfaces together.
- Repairing or Resining Marble, Granite, Quartzite, and Onyx Slabs: Particularly effective for surfaces with micro-cracks (liquid version).
- Bonding Different Materials: Joining materials like marble/metal, marble/glass, marble/honeycomb, and more (solid version).
- Sealing Stone and Concrete Flooring Joints: Ideal for both indoor and outdoor areas like terraces to prevent water infiltration.
- Creating Moldings for Shower Trays and Wooden Tables: Epoxy resins are also used for creating transparent casts, making them perfect for clear resin pours.
How to Prepare Epoxy Resin
The mixing ratio between resin and hardener varies depending on the type of epoxy resin used, but it is generally a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio.
Curing Time of Epoxy Resins
Two-component epoxy resins offer long working times, with complete curing typically requiring around 24 hours.
New Technologies Applied to Epoxy Resins
The marble industry’s needs are constantly evolving. The company Tenax from Verona has developed new epoxy systems with transparent resins resistant to yellowing caused by sunlight. Liquid vs Solid Epoxy Resins: What's the Difference?
Epoxy putty comes in two forms:
- Liquid: With its viscosity, liquid epoxy resin can deeply penetrate and seal microcracks and fissures on marble, granite, quartzite, and onyx.
- Solid: Suitable for bonding different materials, laminating, or gluing 45° cuts.
- Both versions can be tinted with epoxy-based color pastes for customized results.
